Further information on the activities available through the Phoenix Club

The Phoenix Club is not a commercial fitness centre. We provide sessions based on many types of activities using different muscle groups and requiring many different types of sports skills, so hopefully there is something for everyone to enjoy.  If you want to progress onto a commercial fitness centre or other activity programme in this region we can help you to do so. Details of other programmes are provided on the links page.

Our job is to ensure your safety and make sure you enjoy yourself so that you can take your newly peaked interest in physical activity and wellness back to a home based physical activity programme. There is also professional advice available and a series of seminars that you are welcome to attend. The activities available include:

Nature Walks

You can walk around the beautiful Wivenhoe Park. The walks often take in areas such as the River Colne, Wivenhoe and the Campus grounds of the University of Essex.

Team/Individual Sports

A selection of team and individual sports played at a recreational pace will be offered. These will vary based on the weather and availability of courts etc but will include tennis, badminton, hockey and other sports.

Circuit Training

A variety of circuits sessions will be offered, including some with seated exercises and others of a higher intensity which will include walking and using mini-tramps. Circuits enable you to work at your own pace and you can define your own intensity.

Flexibility & Stretching

As you restart your physical activity programming increasing flexibility and reducing muscle stiffness are important. We will teach you how to warm-up and stretch properly before and after each activity session.

Seminars

We will host a seminar a week for you to attend to get some information on some of the burning questions you may have about physical activity and health related topics. These seminars relate to your programme, motivation, and how to exercise in your own home.

Further Advice

If you feel that it would be helpful we can refer you to a number of other services that can help you in your lifestyle changes. These include advice on:

  • Nutrition
  • Further Physical Activity
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Stress Management
